More about Soreghina, the king's daughter from the legends of the Dolomites
Soreghina actually means sun beam. That’s the concept the following story develops from.
Once upon a time, a small lake was to be found in the area called “Locia di Contrin”,
and there lived Viviana, who was as beautiful as the sun. She was dressed in a wonderful dress,
a bodice with silver embroidery and the breast part covered in gold,
and an apron made of bright silk.
Viviana married King Mortic’s son. One year later they got a wonderful daughter.
They baptised her Soreghina because she was as charming as a sunbeam.
Only when the sun was shining did the mother emerge from the lake with her little girl.
Then the small being shone like pure gold in her mother’s arm. It was said she could only
live with the sun and that she was actually the sun’s daughter.
One day the mother saw it was going to be a nice and clear day.
Viviana wanted to walk up the mountains, to Ciampac, with her daughter.
But it got dark sooner than expected and even if the mother hurried home
as quickly as she could, she only arrived at the lake long after sunset.
Little Soreghina could not stand it, began to shiver and did not recover.
She died the very same night.
The sunbeam dies in the darkness of the night. That is the message conveyed
by this story from the Dolomites.
As dramatic as the ending of this fairy tale may seem, it has the sun at its core.
As a wise proverb goes, she always shines; at rainfall she also does so, just hidden
by the clouds. |
