Ice climbing in Val Gardena/Gröden - a point for South Tyrol |
| |
They are masters of the vertical line. Ice climbing on deeply frozen waterfalls is the youngest and perhaps also the most spectacular Alpine sport. With climbing irons and ice tools that have no longer anything in common with the former ice axes, you start into the vertical ice. Ice screws, rope, climbing harness and helmet provide a high degree of safety. Accidentally walking by such a scene, some might, however, find their blood freeze in their veins just by looking at it.
But there is also the easier, playful version for beginners. As unbelievable as it may sound, the technique is easy to learn. Following the expert explanations of a “Catores” mountain guide from Val Gardena/Gröden, the ice-cold dance on the top of the climbing irons soon leads to passion and obsession. There are special test days where you can try climbing some metres up the ice and find out what it is like when the deep frozen beauty underneath you crunches and crackles. |
